161st Huron Battalion Diary-December 31, 1915

Enlistments – December 31, 1915

On December 31, 1915, eleven men enlisted in the 161st Huron Battalion. Four of these eleven men did not return home at war’s end.

654178, BENNETT, (Pte.) William Clarence, “A” Company enlisted in Brussels. His next of kin was Joseph Bennett of Walton, ON. He was shown with the Wingham, Brussels, Wroxeter Boys of the 161st.

654123, BISSETT, (Sgt.) Thomas Harold, “C” Company enlisted in Exeter. His next of kin was Mrs. Thomas Bissett of Exeter, ON. While overseas, Sergeant Tom Bissett was a member of the 161st Sgts. Mess and was photographed with them standing in the third row, fifth from the left by A.P. Taylor.

654140, BLACK, (Pte.) Robert Anderson, “A” Company joined the 161st’s “A” Company in Brussels, ON. His next of kin was Robert Black of Wroxeter, ON. Private R.A Black was featured in a photograph of Wroxeter’s Own, kneeling in the middle row, twelfth from the left.

654141, BLACK, (L. Cpl) Roy Melvin, “B” Company enlisted in Goderich. His next of kin was James Black of Goderich, ON. Lance Corporal Roy Black was photographed with Goderich’s Own standing in the fourth row, tenth from the left.

654127, CURRIE, (Pte.) Harold James, “A” Company enlisted in Wingham. His next of kin was W. J. Currie of R.R. 5 Wingham, ON. Private H. J. Currie was featured in the Wingham, Brussels, Wroxeter Boys of the 161st photograph in the front row. This photograph was reprinted in the Wingham Advance-Times, April 1967 on the 50th anniversary of Vimy.

654213, LITTLECHILD, (Pte.) Charles Cecil, “B” Company enlisted in Goderich.

654155, LOVETT, (Pte.) Edgar George, “C” Company enlisted in Clinton. His next of kin was Nellie Lovett of Godalming, Surrey, England.

654131, MACDONALD, (Pte.) Thomas Todd, “A” Company enlisted in Wingham, his hometown before WWI. His next of kin was Daird MacDonald of Wingham. Tom MacDonald acquired prior military experience with the 33rd Huron Regiment.

654133, OSMAN, (Pte.) Alfred, “B” Company enlisted in Goderich. His next of kin was Mrs. Amy Osman of Goderich, ON. Private Alf Osman, a native of England, was photographed with Goderich’s Own, standing in the fifth (back) row, thirty-fifth from the left. He was identified in this photo by his step-sister, Mrs. H. (Ivy) Johnstone of Brittannia Road, Goderich, ON.

During an interview in November 1980 at the home of Mrs. Harold Johnstone, a daughter of William J. Ruddock, she stated, “Private Alfred Osman was the son of my father’s first wife. She had previously been married to an Osman.”

654162, RANN, (Pte.) William Edward, “A” Company enlisted in Brussels. His next of kin was Mrs. Mary Rann of Wroxeter.

654167, SAVAGE, (L. Cpl.) Thomas Davidson, “A” Company enlisted in Brussels. His next of kin was Thomas H. Savage of Wroxeter. Lance Corporal Thomas D. Savage was included in the photo of Wroxeter’s Own in the front row, fifth from the left.
