Enlistments – January 7, 1916
On January 7, 1916, the following seven men enlisted. One of these seven men did not return home at war’s end.
654347, BATES, (Pte.) John Henry, “B” Company enlisted in his hometown of Goderich. His next of kin was Geo. D. Bates of Huron Road, Goderich, ON. Private J.H. Bates was one of two brothers who enlisted with the 161st’s B Company. John Bates was a former printer on the staff of the Goderich Signal. He was photographed with Goderich’s Own standing in the top row, 25th from the left. He was identified by former Huron County jailor, R.W. Bell, formerly of Saint Andrews St., Goderich, ON.
654196, CURRIE, (Cpl.) Harold Reginald, Signals enlisted in Clinton with the 161st Signallers. His next of kin was Peter Currie of Goderich.
654198, KELLY, (Cpl.) Joseph Allen, “A” Company enlisted in Wroxeter. His next of kin was J.W. Kelly of Irlamas O’ the Heights, Manchester, England.
Corporal Joe Kelly was a member of A Company of the 161st’s detachment at Wroxeter and was photographed with Wroxeter’s Own seated in the front row at the extreme left.
654199, KERR, (Pte.) Joseph John, “A” Company enlisted on January 7, 1916 in his hometown of Wingham, ON, where he returned after WWI. His next of kin was his father, Joseph John Kerr Sr. of R.R. 3, Wingham, ON. Prior to enlistment, Joseph Kerr was a farmer on the family farm in Turnberry Township on Plan 410, Lot 52. He was born on July 27, 1890 to Joseph John Kerr (1862-1939) and Luella Salter (1866-1932) and his siblings were Robert G. (1887), Edward R. (1900-1926) and Kathleen (1903). Edward and Kathleen were born in England and immigrated in 1905. Private Joe Kerr was part of the A Company photograph that was featured in a Wingham Advance edition of 1967, in which he is seated in the front row, 2nd from the left.
654199, LAIRD, (Pte.) Robert John, “A” Company enlisted in Wroxeter. His next of kin was Mrs. Isabella E. Laird of Fordwich, ON. Robert Laird was photographed with Company A in the 2nd back row, 28th from the left. This photograph was published in the April 6, 1967 edition of the Wingham Advance Times. Robert Laird was a native of Ireland.
654191, McARTHUR, (Sgt.) Sidney Ellis, “D” Company enlisted in Hensall. His next of kin was Mrs. Margaret McArthur of Hensall, ON. Sgt. S.E. McArthur was photographed with Hensall’s Own, standing in the 3rd row.
654249, STODDART, (Pte.) Herbert Reginald, “Signals” enlisted in Clinton with the 161st’s Signallers. His next of kin was Caroline Stoddart of Clinton. Herbert Stoddart was a native of the United States.
