Commissions – January 11, 1916

Two officers were commissioned on January 11, 1916 in the 161st Huron Battalion.

MacPHERSON, (Captain) Charles Kenneth was commissioned in Clinton. He had prior army duty with the 33rd Huron Regiment and was photographed with the Officers of the 161st in Clinton in 1916 in the top row, 4th from the left.

SCOTT, (Lieut.) Donald Stewart was commissioned in Clinton. His next of kin was Peter Scott of Brussels. Lieutenant Donald S. Scott was photographed with the Officers of the 161st in Clinton in 1916 in the top row, 3rd from the left.

Enlistments – January 11, 1916

Eight men enlisted on January 11, 1916 in the 161st Huron Battalion. One of these eight men did not return home at war’s end.

654238, COOK, (Pte.) Mansfield Smith, “C” Company enlisted in his hometown of Clinton. His next of kin was Fred Cook of Clinton, ON. According to the 161st overseas roll, Mansfield Cook and bandsman, Glen Cook were sons of Fred Cook of Clinton.

654242, HOLMES, (L. Sgt.) John Elwood, “A” Company enlisted in Wingham, his hometown prior to WWI. His next of kin was Dudley Holmes of Wingham, ON. John E. Holmes had prior military duty with the 33rd Huron Regiment.

Lance/Sergeant J.E. Holmes was photographed with the Wingham/Brussels/Wroxeter Boys of the 161st in the 2nd back row.

654212, LETSON, (Pte.) William Charles, “B” Company enlisted in his hometown of Goderich. His next of kin was Mrs. Mary Letson of Goderich. Pte. W.C. Letson was photographed kneeling in the 2nd row, 21st from the left in the photo of Goderich’s Own. He was identified by R.W. Bell, formerly of Saint Andrews St., Goderich.

654292, THUELL, (Pte.) Frederick Nelson, “A” Company enlisted in Brussels. His next of kin was William Thuell of Brussels, who was also stated as the next of kin of Ptes. Roy and Joe Thuell.

654293, THUELL, (Pte.) Joseph Clarence, “A” Company enlisted in Brussels on January 11, 1916 on the same day as his brother, Fred Thuell. Private Joe Thuell was drafted overseas to the 47th Westminister, British Columbia. 

654235, ORCHARD, (Pte.) Francis Cecil, “A” Company joined the 161st in Wingham. His next of kin was Mrs. S. Orchard of Warminster, England. Prior to WWI, Private F.C. Orchard was living in St. Helen’s, a community in West Wawanosh Township.

654244, NEELY, (Pte.) Charles Franklin, “D” Company enlisted in Seaforth. His next of kin was Mrs. Mary Neely of Seaforth. Private Charles Neely’s brother, Arthur, was also a member of the 161st “D” Company.

654236, STEWART, (Pte.) Wilfrid Grant, “C” Company enlisted in Exeter. His next of kin was James Stewart of Exeter, ON. 

654233, JOHNSTON, (Pte.) Frank, “A” Company, born in England, enlisted in Wingham. His next of kin was Mrs. Elizabeth Hex of 25 Crowshay Road, London, England.
