Clinton and Bayfield Companies On the March in February 1916

In February 1916, the “C” Company of the 161st Battalion marched from Clinton to Bayfield and was billeted overnight. “C” Company was made up of enlisted men from the Clinton-Bayfield area. Their help was needed at a recruiting rally in Bayfield.

There was a recruiting rally in the Town Hall that night, at which there were two speakers; Colonel Barry Combe and Medical Officer and Major W.J. Shaw of Clinton. During impromptu program Jimmy Roualt played the mouth organ and did step dancing.

Two young Lieutenants, staying overnight with Dr. Ninian Woods and family, had to make a dash from the breakfast table the next morning when the call to fall in was sounded. One of the soldiers at the table was Rex Cluff.
