Faces of the 161st Huron Battalion

ScanAs this diary continues and photos are found of the men of the Huron 161st, they will be added.

The faces of the boys and men who responded to the call that went out for more troops in December 1916, were young, smiling faces, ready for adventure in Europe.

The creation of a Huron Battalion meant these men and boys got to train and fight together. A piece of Huron County transported into the midst of a war that was dragging on.

The battles in Europe were long and hard. Those battalions that had come to the field in 1914 and 1915 needed help. Victories begat more skirmishes and battles. A quick win had faded from view. The call for more soldiers was loud, and a touch desperate.
