161st Battalion – Only 1 New Soldier

161st Battalion Enlistments – March 5, 1916

Only one man enlisted in the 161st Hurons on March 5, 1916.

654775, McCLINCHEY, (Pte.) David John, Stretcher-Bearer enlisted in Clinton, Ontario. His next of kin was John McClinchey of Auburn, Ontario. Prior to enlistment, David McClinchey taught school. David J. McClinchey was photographed with the Huron 161st Stretcher-Bearers as standing to the extreme left in the back row. His sister, Ms. Iona Jefferson of Mary St., Clinton provided Sandy MacDonald with a pre-WWI photo of David McClinchey with his high school students that was featured in the June 1980 edition of the 161st newsletter.

Private David McClinchey did not survive WWI. He was killed during the Battle of Arras in August 1918. He is memorialized on the Memorial plaque in the Blyth Memorial Hall.
