Huron 161st Appeal Falls on Deaf Ears?

Enlistments – May 12, 1916

On May 12, 1916, two men enlisted with the 161st Huron Battalion. One of the two men enlisted on this day, did not return home after the war.

654794, HEWER, (Pte.) Lloyd Bertram, Bandsman, enlisted in Clinton on May 12, 1916. His next of kin was John Hewer of Wingham, ON.

Private Lloyd Hewer was a member of the 161st Huron Battalion’s brass band and was photographed with fellow bandsmen at Camp Borden in the summer of 1916, seated in the front row, 11th from the left, holding a clarinet.

654815, WATTERS, (Pte.) Robert Cecil, “A” Company, enlisted in Fordwich on May 12, 1916. His next of kin was Ms. Charlotte Watters of Fordwich, ON.

Private Robert C. Watters was photographed with Wroxeter’s Own in the back row, 14th from the left.

Private Robert C. Watters did not survive WWI. He died in England in November 1916.
